Got Questions?

Here are a number of frequently-asked questions that we get:

How much personal time will it take?

In addition to weekly rehearsals throughout the year, we participate in a Sweet Adelines regional competition in the spring of each year. If we win Regional, we compete Internationally about every 3rd year. We tend to perform in and around our area about approximately once a month or 4-6 times per year in the summer parks, for local festivals, business events, charitable events, as well as presenting a Holiday show.

What is the audition procedure?

Our audition procedure is simple and painless. After 3 (or more) visits, when you're ready to apply for membership, we ask that you record yourself singing the song of your choice from the risers. We'll even provide the recorder should you need one! Turn the recording over to your section leader or the guest coordinator for coaching. More than one audition recording is OK. Once the audition is passed, the music team will send their recommendations to the Board of Directors to pass your name forward to the membership for a vote.

Do I have to be a great singer or musician?

No! We want people who love to sing! The barbershop style of harmony singing favors a straighter tone quality - not operatic vibrato - in order to produce ringing chords. Every voice adds their own unique flavor to an ensemble group like ours. Many of our members cannot even read music! However, a good ear for tuning is a definite plus.

How do I learn the songs?

We provide learning tracks/recordings in each voice part for all our music. Recording yourself or your section leader at rehearsals is one great learning tool. We each take personal responsibility to learn and memorize our part, the interpretation, choreography and much more for each song in the chorus repertoire. In addition to section leaders, there are many willing, talented members available to help you learn your part.

What is the cost?

Twin Cities Show Chorus attempts to pay for all or most of our chorus costumes, music and other material expenses through projects and performances. We do however require you to pay a rental fee for some pieces of the costumes and purchase outright some of the perishables - eg. shoes & makeup. Payments can be worked out with the costume committee if necessary. There are also annual dues for International, Region 6 and the Chapter as explained below.

First Payment Covers Only International and Regional Dues

Upon your acceptance into the chorus, you will be asked to complete an Application Form for Sweet Adelines International. A check in the amount of $150.00 needs to be written to the Twin Cities Show Chorus. This check covers your New Membership application fee as follows:

  1. $100.00 International Dues
  2. $50.00 Regional Assessment Dues

Note: International dues for youth membership (25 and under) are half. (The date this fee and your application are accepted by Sweet Adelines International becomes your annual Membership anniversary date.)

Adding Chapter Dues Later

On the first quarter following your acceptance into the chorus, you will receive a pro-rated dues statement for monies to be escrowed prior to the end of the fiscal year (May 1st - April 30th). This will include chapter, Regional, and International dues.

Effective May 1st 2016, you will receive quarterly dues statements for the annual dues.

You may pay the full or any partial amounts quarterly, semi-annually, or annually.  The full amount is due no later than April 30th, regardless of your International anniversary date.

Annual dues are comprised as follows:

  1. $100.00 International Dues
  2. $50.00 Regional Assessment Dues
  3. $230.00 Chapter Dues
  4. $25.00 Chapter Costume fee

Total Annual Dues: $405.00

These payments will be put in an escrow account until your annual renewal date when they are made available to the Chorus and the appropriate amounts are then sent to International and Region Six by the Chapter Treasurer. The Chapter dues are utilized by the chorus for chapter expenses.

If paying quarterly, dues are paid as follows:

Quarter Dates Covered Date Due
First quarter May 1 - July 31 July 1st
Second quarter Aug 1 - Oct 31 October 1st
Third quarter Nov 1 - Jan 31 January 1st
Fourth quarter Feb 1 - April 30 April 1st
